The Life U Women's Cross Country team made an impressive start to their 2015 season with a third place finish in the Dalton State Twilight Classic on Friday. The short course, 4-kilometer distance as opposed to the standard 5-kilometer, made for some fast times, but it did not faze the Running Eagles as they finished with a team split (average) of 18:16.
Cora Atkinson paced Life U, clocking in with a time of 17:26 to capture 6th place overall.
Elizabeth Skipper crossed the line in 17:53, good enough for a 13th place finish.
Jaichelle Thomas ran a solid 18:21 to come in 17th.
Victoria Favela-Parra was not far behind with a 18:46 to place 24th.
Stephanie Estrada crossed the line next in 25th place with a time of 18:53.
These five placements added up to the team score of 85, which put them in third place out of ten teams.
Annie Diaz ran a 19:19 to finish in 30th place; Rachel Taylor finished in 40th place with a 20:24; and Mariana Sanchez ran a 20:45 in 45th place. And while their times and placements did not count toward the team score, the placements were significant because they displaced runners of the other teams, causing their team scores to be higher and thus finish lower in the standings.
It was a great first outing for the team and something to build on as they prepare for their next meet on September 12 in Greenville, SC at the Furman Cross Country Classic.
