#17 Life loses to #3 Mountain State
at the Regional Tournament
ORANGEBURG, SC 03/08/10 -- It was a disappointing loss for #17 Running Eagles tonight at final game of the NAIA's Association of Independent Institution's Tournament in Orangeburg, SC. Life lost to #3 Mountain State University (WV), 105-84, after they beat the Cougars last Saturday at Mountain State, 113-89. Tonight the Cougars were led by Nick Aldridge who had 31 points and 10 rebounds. Life was led by Greg Brown who had 20 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Ken Moore who scored 14 pts and had 9 rebounds. James Hooper had 7 assists and 6 rebounds.
"It was a poor shooting night for the team and that led to our loss," said Life University's Associate Director of Athletics Bill Firnbach. "It was a disappointing loss for the team after winning eight games in a row. This would've been a good win and another conference championship for our second year back."
The Running Eagles entered the tournament second seed behind Mountain State University. Life won their first game in the tournament against Lambuth University, 118-90.
Life Wins On Senior Night
02/23/10 - Life University's Running Eagles went out with a bang at their last home game of the season tonight against the Talladega College Tornadoes, 99-71. Life led for most of the first half and entered the second half ahead 39-30. Life's Greg Brown was the leading scorer with 20 points, followed by Bryant Dunn who scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals. JaQuan Bray scored 14 points and Tay Barber scored 12 points and had 8 assists. As a team, the Running Eagles forced 17 steals and 33 turnovers. Talladega was led by Kerry Harvis who scored 21 points.
Life recognized their eight seniors tonight at the start of the game: Darius Bates, Bryant Dunn, Greg Brown, Tay Barber, Ryan Daugherty, Ken Moore, JaQuan Bray and Mario Bennett. It was a fitting end to have all of the seniors who were dressed score points tonight.
"This was probably our best defensive effort of the year. Everybody got involved and worked hard for 40 minutes," said Head Coach John Barrett. "It makes us feel good to be playing basketball at that level this late in the season against a good team. The Talladega series is always comeptitive, and we're proud of the way everyone played."
Life Beats Chicago Lions in Pre-season Match
02/22/10 - 60 degrees and sunshine met both teams on Saturday in Georgia for their pre-season match.
After a two-day camp in Marietta, GA, at the Life University Sports Complex, Life University and the Chicago Lions tested one another with three 40-minute halves. (The unofficial score at the end of two halves was Life 51 Chicago 19)
"It was a very evenly contested scrimmage and I'm sure both teams will be able to use it for just what it was intended, a starting point for Rugby Super League season. We are extremely grateful to be able to get a match with a club with Chicago that proves its worth, year after year. It's a win/win for both programs in that we can get in a tough pre season match and Chicago can get South for a good three-day camp to kick start their pre season campaign, " said Director of Life Rugby Dan Payne. "We didn't keep score as much as we kept track of what we need to work on."
Thanks to Marty Wiggins and his club for the match from Life University Rugby...
Life wins big over Cincinnati Christian
02/20/10 - Today Life University added another big win to their record against Cincinnati Christian College, 96-57. Life was ahead in the game from the very beginning and led into the second half 41-28. Tay Barber was the leading scorer for the Running Eagles with 24 points and had 3 steals, followed by Greg Brown who scored 15 points and had 6 steals. As a team, Life had 19 steals and forced 28 turnovers. Cincinnati was led by Joseph Dowell who scored 15 points and had 3 steals. Life hosts their last home game of the season this Tuesday against Talladega College at 7:30 p.m.
"We've been playing very well lately, but today we struggled right out of the gate. Eventually our defense created a lot of turnovers and we got a couple runs going," said head coach John Barrett. "Wecame out in the second half and settled down, played our style of basketball. The defense dictated the offense and we wound up with a nice win. Now we're onto the next game."
Currently Life ranks 2nd in scoring margin (26.6) and 2nd in total steals (322). Life's Greg Brown is 1st in total steals (77) and 2nd in steals per game (3.08).
Life finishes South D 1 Undefeated
03/09/10 - Life University's Division 1 regular season closes with a perfect 6-0 record heading into the playoffs after a hard win over the Atlanta Renegades last Saturday. Life celebrated a 41-28 win over the Renegades, which puts Life in the #1 seed for the cross over matches on March 20. Life will host the first round match of the South playoffs at home at 12:30 p.m. prior to the season opener for Life's Super League at 2:30.
Life's Super League squad traveled to Jonesboro , Arkansas to play a pre-season game against #4 ranked Arkansas State team that has been absolutely pummeling their opponents this year. After a tough game, Life earned the 'W' with a 38-15 victory. A rkansas State will be one of the premier teams in this year's college championships, without a doubt. It was a great day for both teams in their preparation and the trip served as the beginning of a strong relationship between the two programs.
"It's not a secret that Arkansas State is building one of the strongest collegiate programs in the country. We hope to be able to retain some of their elite athletes within the South by offering them the chance to continue their education while playing the caliber of rugby they're becoming accustomed to playing by joining our program at Life University," said Director of Life Rugby Dan Payne.
